NYC is home to a great number of historic landmarks that unfortunately many tourists miss out on. Below we look at the oldest and most architectural noteworthy buildings which date back to New York’s origins.
Apollo Theater
Now over 78 years old the Harlem institution has seen a number of historic moments like when Ella Fitzgerald first performed there back in 1934, or when James Brown was first recorded there in 1962 which practically made him a household name. People familiar with Jimi Hendrix‘s career will remember when he won the Amateur Nights contest back in 1964.
BLDG 92
This is located at the former military residence on the Brooklyn Navy Yard and hosts a small museum which showcases the former history of this shipbuilding center. The yard was at its peak during the second World War at which point it employed over 70,000 people. Exhibits at the building examine the origins and the significance of the yard through history. People can also enjoy a cup of coffee and snacks at local cafes as well as a weekend bus tour which costs around $25 but takes you across the 8000 square foot exhibit space which features the past, present and the future exhibit. If you are on a budget consider the free weekend shuttle which usually departs from Jay St at Willoughby St after every 20 minutes.
The Chrysler Building
This is no doubt one of the symbols of NYC and perhaps the Art Deco makes it the most visible skyscraper too. Its triangle shaped windows at the crown and its lighting create what many believe to be a mesmerizing effect at night. The structure was built to pay homage to the giant eagles, something which you could once see proudly marking Chrysler automobiles of the 20s. However, the building is only outdone in terms of size by the Empire State Building completed in the 1930s.
